Ryan Reed Tackles Diabetes On and Off the Track NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Ryan Reed finished fourth at Subway Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway last Friday, July 4. Ryan, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 17, was told he would never race again. With a strong effort to continue on, Ryan found Anne Peters, MD, of USC Clinical Diabetes Program in California, who confirmed that with hard work, Ryan could still reach his dreams of becoming a top NASCAR driver.
Ryan has since joined forces with the American Diabetes Association and Lilly Diabetes on the Drive to Stop DiabetesSM program, an initiative launched in 2013 that brings awareness and diabetes education to thousands at select NASCAR races nationwide, as well as at several off-track health and wellness initiatives. Through Ryan’s example, children and adults with diabetes can see that diabetes doesn’t need to stand in the way of pursuing their dreams.
Following his fourth place finish, Ryan will continue to compete in the full schedule of NASCAR Nationwide Series races throughout 2014 driving the #16 American Diabetes Association Drive to Stop Diabetes presented by Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang, featuring a Drive to Stop Diabetes paint scheme. Be sure to tune in and watch him race in the New England 200 this Saturday, July 12, at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2!
