| Good afternoon Andrea,
Mark your calendars; May 6, 2015 marks the launch of the American Diabetes Association’s inaugural National Get Fit Don't Sit Day!
National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day is May 6 and the Association is using this day to encourage companies across the country to engage in healthy lifestyle choices by urging their employees to limit the amount of time they spend at their desks. In fact, the Association recommends that all people should get up and get moving at least every 90 minutes during the day.
National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day is a part of the Association’s Wellness Lives Heresm initiative which provides year-round opportunities to encourage healthy living and to support organizational health and wellness. There is also an opportunity for companies to be recognized by the Association through our Corporate Health Champion Designation.
People spend an average of 5 hours and 41 minutes per day sitting at work each week and research suggests that it’s wreaking absolute havoc on our health and well-being. In fact, research shows prolonged sitting is associated with a 91 percent increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The Association promotes the importance of healthy lifestyle choices as an important way to manage, prevent and control diabetes. National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day is a call to get up and get moving during the workday and a step that employees can take toward better health. Visit our website and find out how you can get involved and get your workplace moving with our free toolkit here.
