| Dear Andrea, As a diabetes researcher, I know how research has improved the lives of people living with this disease. Medical research is something where the United States has been a leader, but the White House and Congress are considering greatly reducing the funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s why we need you, and everyone who cares about people with diabetes, to sign our petition to say “prioritize diabetes research!" For example, federal research has led to the first hybrid insulin pump, the first clinical trial of a precision medicine approach to individualize diabetes treatment, a better understanding of the triggers of diabetes, and the identification of subtypes of insulin-producing beta cells. There are many opportunities for research to continue improving the lives of people with diabetes. We must increase, not reduce, the funding for diabetes research now; the stakes are too high and we’ve come too far. Thank you for supporting diabetes-related research. Together for diabetes research, Alvin C. Powers, MD President, Medicine & Science American Diabetes Association P.S.
