Diabetes researchers are a diverse group – some are geneticists, some are endocrinologists, some are engineers… For some, fighting diabetes is very personal. And, there are two things they all have in common: - They have dedicated their careers to improving the health and saving the lives of people with and affected by diabetes.

 Every year, we receive 1,000+ promising research proposals, however, we can only fund a small fraction of them. We never know where the next breakthrough in science will arise, that's why it's critical that we support the exploration of as many good ideas as possible. Scientists are hard at work for you. When you donate to diabetes research, you support people like Dr. Mark A. Atkinson, PhD, who is leading research to understand if people with type 1 diabetes can still make insulin.
Scientists have long thought that type 1 diabetes results after a complete destruction of insulin-producing cells. Dr. Atkinson's research suggests that there might be an alternate form of cells in people with type 1 diabetes. If we can understand how these cells work, we can then start looking for ways for someone's body to start producing its own supply of insulin again and potentially reverse type 1 diabetes.
