Andrea,

4x6 Dr Reusch Jane 2.jpgEach year, we receive hundreds of promising research proposals. Unfortunately, we can afford to fund only a fraction of them. While not every study will result in a breakthrough, we risk losing new discoveries with each study that goes unfunded. That's why it is critical that we support the exploration of as many good ideas as possible.

Research funding is an investment in people. Research funding provides critical support that enables talented scientists to continue to seek answers that will lead to better treatments for diabetes, a reduction in diabetes complications, and, one day, a cure for diabetes. Some young researchers we fund will go on to become world renowned experts and 99% remain dedicated to careers in diabetes science, making vital discoveries and mentoring others.

Donate to support diabetes research today. Your contribution makes a difference and provides much needed support.

Dr. Jane Reusch knew how much diabetes and its complications affected the day-to-day lives of her loved ones, including her grandfather, her father, and her niece who was diagnosed at just 2 years old. This personal history set the stage for her esteemed career as a diabetes researcher and physician. In medical school, while listening to a lecture on diabetes that she found fascinating, Dr. Reusch turned to a friend and said, "I need to do research in diabetes." She was driven to understand diabetes, and to use her insights to improve treatments and the lives of people living with diabetes.

Early in her research career, Dr. Reusch made a discovery that was the opposite of what the literature at that point might have predicted about how insulin regulates gene expression. However, she needed to test her hypothesis, and Dr. Reusch was not sure if she'd have the funds to conduct the experiments. She applied for and received her first ADA grant. With funding, Dr. Reusch was able to prove that she was right! Since that time, Dr. Reusch has made many more unexpected findings. "It was my early experience that gave me the courage to persevere in the research world of rejection and to challenge existing ideas with a goal to change the outcomes for people with diabetes."

Today, Dr. Reusch is truly one of the leaders in the diabetes field. She focused her research career on the prevention of diabetes complications, and her accomplishments have been widely recognized around the world. In addition to her research and clinical practice, Dr. Reusch is a mentor and an educator. She passionately advocates for recruitment and retention of new researchers. We are proud to say that Dr. Reusch has also been a volunteer and leader for the ADA for nearly three decades.

We hope she inspires you the way she inspires us to keep diabetes progress coming.

Thank you again for your support—everything you do makes a difference and is so appreciated.

"Money is not everything, yet in research, money equals transformation. We need diabetes research funding, and we need it now. Diabetes is one of the most important health crises facing the world—only research can change that curve."
