Hi Andrea,

Insulin prices TRIPLED between 2002-2013

As you know, insulin is a lifesaving medication, and the soaring price has affected many Americans living with diabetes. With your help, the ADA has been advocating for increased affordability.

Our insulin affordability campaign started two years ago today and has hit a major milestone: 418,220 individuals have signed the ADA’s online petition calling for greater transparency across the insulin supply chain and for action to ensure all people who need insulin have affordable access—the largest response to an ADA call to action to date. Thank you!

Your voices have been heard. Diabetes Advocates called for Congressional hearings to investigate the reasons for the dramatic increases in insulin costs. The U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging answered with a hearing in May of this year. Chief Scientific, Medical, and Mission Officer William T. Cefalu testified about the impact of the high costs on individuals with diabetes.

Diabetes Advocates called for Congress to take action to ensure all people who need insulin have affordable access. The Congressional Diabetes Caucus answered by releasing a list of policy recommendations they intend to pursue. Many of the Caucus’ recommendations align closely with ADA’s own proposals. Steps like these pave the way for legislation that can eventually lower costs.

Since the launch of ADA’s campaign, increased pressure from Diabetes Advocates has had a tangible impact for people with diabetes. States have passed legislation to require drug coverage to be more patient friendly. More discounts negotiated in the insulin supply chain will be shared with people with diabetes. These milestones are important, but our work will not be complete until individuals with diabetes see relief at the pharmacy counter.

Will you help keep the momentum going? Help us reach 500,000 signatures before the end of the year. Urge your family and friends to sign the petition at www.makeinsulinaffordable.org/petition and please share why insulin affordability matters to you. By doing this, you will help us continue to build a movement of individuals committed to tackling this problem.

The ADA’s Make Insulin Affordable website also includes information and resources for people who are struggling to pay for insulin.

For people with diabetes, this is a matter of life or death, and it’s time for change. Thank you for your incredible advocacy efforts!
